Good Afternoon,
What a weekend! Tiger Woods wins (in his old dominant fashion), Johan Santana pitches a no-hitter (looking like his old self), and the Celtics beat the Heat two games in a row proving that they may not be so old after all. Could it be that all things old are new again…or should they be? Back in 2009 we did a Tip of the Week on, “AOL Email Addresses” even though it’s an old tip it’s one we should revisit.
Tip of the Week: Stop Sending Out Resumes Using Your AOL Email Address!
Here is the question, “What does an AOL email address say to a potential employer about you as a candidate?”
Here is the answer, “Stuck in the 90’s, still using Dial-up, not tech savvy!”
Really…Why? Because AOL was one of the first Internet Service Providers (ISP) and their method for providing ISP services was and still is through dial-up. Impression left-you are out of touch with technology and still use dial-up – even if you do.
Just because Tiger, Johan and the Celtics are playing at their old school dominant levels doesn’t mean that your AOL email makes you look like you are performing the same way. Take this tip to heart and get a Yahoo, Gmail, or Hotmail email address immediately! Don’t let your AOL email address stop a potential employer from experiencing your dominance.
Have a great day and an even better week!

Hi Kwame,
Although potential employers may see AOL as outdated, I have NEVER had a problem retrieving, downloading or losing mail using AOL; I have been with this ISP since day one and it is reliable. On the other hand, I have major problems downloading attachments from Gmail, and Yahoo especially on my smart phone and my Hotmail account was closed due to inactivity years ago. In addition, I cannot access those ISP from work due to the District’s firewall, but I can always rely on AOL which is accessible at work! Anyway, took your advice from the class and switched to Gmail for my resume….until the next new ISP comes…
Thanks,
Trudy

Trudy,
Point well taken. I haven’t lost or not been able to download information from my yahoo, gmail or hotmail accounts but is certainly could happen. As you know my goal is to arm job seekers with as much information as possible for them to navigate the job search and while not all employers do this I want to take it out of play all together.
Oh, and by the way I really and truly have nothing against AOL
Best,
Kwame
