Last week I spoke to a group of young people at an event sponsored by the California Black Legislative Caucus. I left the event with the feeling that our future is in great hands! These young people were professional, attentive, asked questions and absorbed information.
Tip of the Week: Look Good
The key to getting you hired is understanding your value and communicating it. Not too far behind is your appearance. The way you look shouldn’t be the main reason you get a job but it is a contributing factor.
I am less concerned with gimmicks (wear a bold tie or bright color) that some experts say are keys to being remembered and more concerned with overall neatness. It goes without saying (but I will say it for the record anyway) if you are a male going in for an interview you should wear a suit or a sports coat, slacks and a tie. Women should wear a suit if possible but if not a dress (below knees) or blouse and skirt (below knees) or blouse and slacks.
Whatever you wear it should be pressed, shoes shined, hair cut/styled, beard trimmed, makeup and perfume/cologne kept to a minimum. Stay away from bright colors and stick with blues, grays, browns, and black. Bright colors tend to distract the interviewer from what you are saying and my lead to you being remembered but not for the right reason. You only have one chance to make a first impression and making the wrong one my cost you the opportunity of a lifetime. Making the right one will move you one step closer to realizing your dreams.
