Tip of the Week #17: “M” is for Mentor

Howdy,

The weekend is almost here!  A few weeks ago my daughter Jazz was on Sesame Street in a segment called “P” is for Princess. It got me thinking about other letters and sparked this Tip of the Week.

Tip of the Week: “M” is for Mentor

Whether you are actively looking for a job or have been working for the same company for years, you should have a mentor. At all levels of my development I have had mentors (high school, college, and work) who I reached out to when making important decisions or if I just needed to talk.

How do you choose a mentor…? Start by looking for someone that you know and knows you. Someone you respect is in the same industry as you and has achieved a level of success. Then just ask them. Simply say, “I have a great deal of respect for you and what you have been able to accomplish and I would like you to mentor me”. In most cases this person will say yes. Chances are they too have had or have a mentor of their own.

Now this goes both ways, if you are in the position to mentor someone you should. It’s doesn’t take much time and it will make a difference in their and your lives.

So as you get ready for the weekend, remember “P” is for Princess and “M” is for Mentor.

Have a great day and an even better week!
Kwame

I found the best mentor ever over eight years ago at the most unlikely of places- the donut shop where I would pick-up coffee and something to eat before heading to work. So far, he has been my biggest supporter and wisest advisor, and most importantly has helped me to believe a different narrative about who I am and t…he places I will surely go. So hopefully you will all get out there and find that person that encourages you and helps you see things clearly. And now, I’m even more fortunate because Kwame has also become a very trusted and respected mentor.
