Job Search Tip of the Week #68: How to Turn Down a Job U Just Accepted…

Today is the Day!

Happy 6th Birthday to the most beautiful and amazing daughter that anyone could ever ask for.  Daddy loves you!  Here is the 4th Tip of this Week.

Tip of the Week (Day 4): How to Turn Down a Job U Just Accepted…

Last week one of my clients was offered a job and accepted it; great news right?  Actually not so much because yesterday she received an offered from another company…guessing you still don’t see the problem, right?  Well the offer she accepted last week was from her #2 company of choice and the offer she received yesterday was from her #1.  One a side note, boy are we good at helping job seekers get hired…back to the tip. What to do, what to do, what to do?

Whenever accepting a job offer you should always give serious thought to what it will mean for your long-term career goals.  In this case she did just that but the opportunity to work for her company of choice is one that she can’t be passed up, right?  So, how to handle it?

Rescind the offer of acceptance and accept the role with the company of choice.  This should not be done via email but by phone.  You owe those who took time out of their schedules to interview you the courtesy of letting them know directly.  I recommend that you call the recruiter or HR contact and let them know and ask if it’s OK to speak to the hiring manager to let he/she know too.  During these conversations there is no need to go into detail about the offer you are accepting or even the name of the company.  Let them know that the position was the ideal next step for your career and you could not pass it up.

At the end of the day they may not like that you changed your mind but will appreciate that you did so prior to starting and that it was done in a respectful manner.

Have a great day and an even better week!
